SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
here, i wish to discuss my responsibility as a designer in creating sustainable and environmentally caring products.
the most important issue for me is to create a product that is not only beautifully designed and well made, but that also takes care of the environment, nature, traditions, and each other. this might sound naive, but there are actually very few designs out there that are actually beautiful, even though you can see that someone genuinely cared about how it was designed, and that it’s a great thing that they did. i think this is one of the big issues facing sustainable design today.
sustainable design is about designing a product responsibly. it is about designing something beautiful which may be expensive but that takes care of the basic elements mentioned above in a lasting way. it is about developing an emotional relationship with an object, making you want to keep it.

i design and develop street wear with this concept in mind. many journalists and buyers ask me why i design/develop denim that is so expensive, it is out of reach for most people. in fact, doing it this way is one of the most responsible things that i have ever done because no one will ever throw a KOhZO away. it will be around for ages. it is something to treasure for the rest of your life and you can pass it down to your kids.
as a designer, i am obsessed with quality. if you look at the way KOhZO is made/designed and treated, you will realise that no other brands would ever consider making their denims this way because it is too expensive. if you look at KOhZO, you will not be surprised that a huge range of conscientious work and experiments are involved in its creation.
with deepest respect given towards the above-mentioned elements and the human labour force involved, which are the top priorities in my research and development process, every time i design/develop new ideas to introduce something new to the consumer, i am often asked how i am able to work with such a broad scope. my answer is: that’s what i do. i am a problem-solver. designing is about problem-solving, and not just about making nice-looking things.
my approach is not to talk about the design but to talk about the product. as i always say, "i am a nobody. i don’t need the fame. it’s all about the products." every piece i develop is like a mini university degree for me. it’s what i take away from creating it.

this season, i am not going to highlight anything in particular. it is better that one sees and feels the product to make his or her own opinions. every piece is special.
i wish all of you a very fulfilling and successful season with KOhZO. be a part of KOhZO.
